WINNER: Glenn Foot
WINNER: Glenn Foot

HOME fighters completed a near-cleansweep of wins at boxing’s Cream of the Crop show in Houghton.

Glenn Foot, topping the bill at Rainton Meadows Arena, defeated tough Lancashire lad William Warburton over six hard-fought rounds.

Foot, warming up for a crack at Londoner Ahmet Patterson’s English welterweight title in the early spring, started with purpose and while he lost his impetus in rounds four and five, he was back on the accelerator in the last.

Referee Steve Hawkins scored it 59-56 in favour of the Sunderland boxer.

Stablemate Jonson McClumpha was also a points winner, taking all four rounds at middleweight against Kieron Gray for a 40-36 score from referee Mark Curry.

Martin Ward was at his sharpest as he outboxed Ghana’s champion Isaac Owusu over six rounds, Mr Curry marking it 60-54.

Thomas Essomba clinched his second pro victory, 40-36, against game Midlander Brett Fidoe at super-fly.

However, there was a first pro defeat for Lynden Watt who was stopped 14 seconds into round two by Poland’s Roman Glowocz in their super-middleweight clash.

John Green, from Middlesbrough, won all four rounds against Jason Quinn at super-featherweight.
