HARTLEPOOL looks set to add another “exciting” boxer to its professional ranks.
Callum Winton, once dubbed “the mini Ricky Hatton” is training at the Gus Robinson Developments gym with a view to turning pro.
A former national junior champion, Winton’s amateur career had appeared to have stalled but is now looking to get motoring again.
Peter Cope, head coach at the Stranton House gym, believes he will be a “great addition to the Gus Robinson team.”
The 19-year-old is already fighting fit and if his application is sanctioned by the British Boxing Board of Control the former Catholic Club starlet could be in the ring as early as the summer.
Cope said: “He’s really put the work in and he’s looked brilliant in the gym.
“He’s probably the best I’ve had on the pads after Geard Ajetovic.
“Callum has an attacking style that fans can’t get enough of – he’s very exciting.
“He got called the mini Ricky Hatton and he’s like the Hitman – he loves the body punches.
“I’ve had to get a bigger body protector because of the force he hits with!”
