PETER Cope’s bid to win the vacant English super-featherweight title ended in defeat when he was beaten by London’s Mitchell Smith at the York Hall.

Smith controlled the bout and won on all three judges scorecards.

Both prospects entered the ring at Bethnal Green unbeaten so something had to give.

The Londoner, with eight straight wins to his credit, was the sharper of the two fighters, moving well and landing more punches.

Smith, from Harrow, had Cope down in the sixth though the Hartlepool fighter was up at seven of ref Marcus McDonnell’s count

Cope finished the fight well. Buy the verdict was no shock, all three judges scoring it by wide margins 100-90, 99-90 and 100-89
