Maths team is number one

YOUNG number crunchers are celebrating after they beat off stiff competition from 12 other teams to win a prestigious maths challenge.

Four pupils from English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College have been crowned numerical whizz kids after winning the Catholic Partnership Year 8 Maths Challenge.

The regional competition takes place every year and it sees Catholic schools from across the region come together to battle it out in a series of challenges.

All 13 of the schools involved come under the Hexham and Newcastle Diocese. Year 8 pupils Nick Gowland, Holly Rutherford, Chelsea Sinton and Paul Moore, from the Catcote Road school, made up the winning team.

The youngsters, who are all aged either 12 or 13, beat off competition from St Michael's Roman Catholic School, in Billingham, to lift the trophy after three tough rounds of number crunching.

Maths teacher Anthony Hanson said: "The pupils worked well as a team and shone as individuals.

"At this age a lot of the youngsters don't really know what they want to do when they leave school, but hopefully it will be something

numerical, as they clearly have a talent for it.

"Everyone in the maths department is very proud of their achievements and we were delighted to win the carousel round and come first overall too.

"The competition is made up of three rounds of different challenges and questions over the course of half a day.

"This is the first time a team from the school has ever won the competition and this is the third time we have entered.

"There will be a new batch of mathematicians next year to challenge for the trophy."

The annual competition was hosted by St Bede's Catholic School and Sixth Form College, in Lanchester, County Durham, last month.
