Team in the pink to raise cash for cancer fight
A JUNIOR football team will certainly stand out on the pitch this season in their new pink strip that has been created as part of its centenary celebrations.
Youngsters from Wolviston under 12s football team have agreed to pull on the bright jerseys for every away game to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.
Team manager Steve Cooper said: "We discussed what to do for the centenary and thought it would be great to raise money for a good cause.
"All of the lads have mums and grandmas so they realise how important it is to help women who have this disease. The kids don't mind playing in pink at all. They are right behind it.
"We also hope the strip might bring us some good luck along the way."
The team wore it for the first time at the weekend against Greatham.
As well as the pink football shirts and pink and black socks, the team's parents will be selling Breast Cancer Care fundraising merchandise at every away game.
The Teesside Junior Football Alliance and Durham FA are backing Wolviston FC's breast cancer campaign and the kit has been sponsored by chemicals firm Johnson Matthey.
And managers were thrilled this week when League One side Oldham Athletic donated a signed pink shirt which the team wore in a one-off game last season.
Steve added: "We are over the moon. My goal now is to get signed shirts from the five North-East teams and auction them off as one unique item at a sportsman's dinner."
Anyone wishing to donate to the campaign can get more details on the team's website www.wolvistonfc.co.uk
