FORMER on-loan Sunderland star Danny Welbeck has been fined after he was involved in a smash on the A19.

Welbeck picked up a fine and three penalty points after police found he had two defective tyres on his Audi S3, after the two-car crash.

The Manchester United striker denied two offences of using a vehicle with insufficient tread and was due to stand trial at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

But his solicitors wrote to the court offering admissions before the case opened.

Prosecutor Debra Jones said police were called to the northbound carriageway of the A19, near Hawthorn Services, at 1.25am on September 27, last year.

Police found the front tyres on Welbeck’s car both had treads below the legal limit of 1.6mm.

Welbeck, 20, of Altrincham, Cheshire, did not attend the hearing.

He was fined £135 for each charge, told the pay a £15 victim surcharge and court costs of £150.
