Substitute Wayne Rooney also netted in the game, England's penultimate warm-up fixture ahead of Euro 2016.

It was played in front of a crowd of 46,595 at the Stadium of Light.

Roy Hodgson must decide on his final 23-man squad before the final friendly against Portugal at Wembley on June 2.

And Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend – who was booed on to the pitch late in the game by the Sunderland fans in the crowd – faces an anxious few days to see if he is included in Hodgson's selection.

The story of the night was Rashford, who scored 135 seconds into his senior debut.

A cross from Raheem Sterling was deflected up and the ball dropped for the 19-year-old, who volleyed it past Mathew Ryan.

And Manchester United's Rashford, the third-youngest England scorer of all time, will surely now go to Euro 2016 at the expense of Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge, who was unable to play because of a calf problem.

England quickly faded after their bright start, and Australia went on to have the better of the half, though Sunderland-born Jordan Henderson, a ball boy the last time England played at the Stadium of Light, forced a save from Mathew Ryan.

Worryingly, Hodgson's side, which included Liverpool's Sunderland-born midfielder Jordan Henderson, again looked vulnerable defensively.

Rooney came off the bench for the second half along with former Newcastle midfielder James Milner.

And England's captain scored his 52nd senior international goal in the 55th minute.

Sterling broke up the left and slid the ball across to him in space, and the Manchester United forward lashed it past Ryan with his right foot.

Eric Dier put the ball into his own net in the 76th minute, and Townsend was introduced to boos seconds later.

Townsend was lively in the dying minutes, but he could yet miss out on a place in Hodgson's squad.
