COLIN Cooper has not looked for any excuses for Hartlepool United’s 2-0 defeat at Newport County.

It has been a tough week for Pools with three games inside six days.

Last weekend saw Pools beat Notts County 3-2 in the FA Cup First Round before getting knocked out by Rotherham United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in midweek.

The former Middlesbrough and England defender said: “The week started off brightly.

“We then battered Rotherham from pillar to post but weren’t able to put them to bed and lost the game and we came here with expectation, and rightly so.

“Thinking that if we can come here and play as we have done away from home, we have every chance of landing ourselves in the play-off positions.

“But I have to give Newport credit. They have put us under pressure but we haven’t been resilient enough to cope with that they have thrown at us.

“Their home record is extremely strong and it is going to take a team to come here, roll their sleeves up and match what Newport have got to offer.

“And then be able to break them down with quality.

“I thought they were very good.”
