Craig Hignett has emerged as the early frontrunner to be the new Hartlepool United manager.

Ronnie Moore today parted company with the struggling League Two side after a poor run of form.

Hignett, who was Colin Cooper’s No 2 at Victoria Park in the 2013-14 season, is out of work after leaving Middlesbrough last year.

The former Boro midfielder left Pools in March 2014 to take up a role as Aitor Karanka’s assistant.

He is understood to have been approached in the past about a return to Victoria Park and was a contender for the manager’s job before Moore took over in December 2014.
