HARTLEPOOL United have captured the loan signing of Cambridge United striker Ryan Bird on a month-long deal.

As revealed by SportMail, Ronnie Moore thought he had landed Bird ahead of the 1-0 defeat at Bury but the deal collapsed at the last minute after the Us failed to sign their own transfer target.

Moore hoped the deal would be ressurected this week and hopes were raised after Cambridge signed Matt Harrold on loan from Crawley Town until the end of the season.

Pools and two other Conference clubs were keen on the 27-year-old former Portsmouth forward and Bird has now committed to helping the struggling Sky Bet League Two side climb the league.

Bird has been handed squad number 35 and will go straight in to the squad for Saturday’s League Two game against AFC Wimbledon, subject to Football League approval.

He tweeted: “Buzzing to have signed for @Official_HUFC on loan for a month! Time to bang some goals & some wins.”

Bird turned down the chance to leave during the January transfer window, but with options limited at the Abbey Stadium, he has now decided to join basement side Pools on loan.

The 6ft 4” striker was prolific at non-league side Burnham before signing for Portsmouth in 2013-14.

Bird has spent time on loan at Havant & Waterlooville and Cambridge United before signing for the Us on a one-year deal last summer.

He has scored four goals in 21 appearances this season but has only started eight times.
