SIMON Walton has signed for Stevenage – Hartlepool United’s opponents on the first day of the League Two season.

Walton was released by boss Colin Cooper following two seasons at Pools after being signed by Neale Cooper inthe summer of 2012.

The 26-year-old was a mainstay in the midfield last season, enjoying good spells in the centre with both Matty Dolan and Brad Walker.

But he, along with Andy Monkhouse, was deemed surplus to requirements and was released in the summer.

The former Leeds, Charlton, QPR and Plymouth star made 73 appearances for Pools, scoring four times.

But his last appearance was an unhappy one – being sent off in the vital Easter Monday victory over Morecambe at Victoria Park.

Given he’d been red-carded previously last season, at Oxford, he picked up a four-game suspension, meaning he will miss Stevenage v Pools on Saturday, August 9.
