HARTLEPOOL United took a giant leap towards League One safety as they came from behind to claim a 3-1 victory over Yeovil Town.

The win takes Mick Wadsworth’s side 12 points clear of the drop zone with just five games remaining.

Adam Boyd was a surprise inclusion in the Pools line-up, the striker starting a game for just the second time since October.

But the 28-year-old responded with a goal to cancel out Jonathan Obika’s opener before Sam Collins and Colin Larkin sealed the success after half-time.

Pools were left stunned, however, when Obika dispatched a dipping volley from 20 yards in the 10th minute, an eye-catching strike which even drew applause from the home fans.

But the hosts were level just eight minutes later, Boyd showing razor-sharp instincts to swivel and smash a half volley into the roof of the net from six yards after Yeovil had failed to clear an Evan Horwood corner.

Those set-pieces were causing the visitors all manner of problems and it was from another flag-kick that Peter Hartley twice blasted on goal from close range only to be denied first by Craig Alcock and then keeper Stephen Henderson.

Pools then survived a goalmouth scare at the other end when Steve Haslam hacked from the line after Adam Virgo had beaten Scott Flinders to a Max Ehmer centre.

But the second half was all about Pools and Tony Sweeney should have tested Henderson when sprung clear by Boyd’s deft flick but his shot was blocked by the recovering Alcock.

Wadsworth’s men did edge in front though just after the hour mark, skipper Collins stabbing home through bodies after Leon McSweeney’s corner had fell invitingly.

And two became three soon after as Horwood stole in behind the Glovers backline before drawing back for substitute Larkin to turn in at the near post with his first touch.
