The Pools boss described the 1,684-strong support at Bloomfield Road as “magnificent”.

And while Pools have the unenviable record of being bottom of League Two’s away table, Jones hopes the supporters liked what they saw and will return, despite the fact they suffered defeat number 12.

“There was times in the game when we were like the home side, with those fans behind us,” said the former Stockport, Southampton, Cardiff, Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday boss.

“The fans were magnificent.

“I’m used to that and hope that continues, it was fantastic the noise they made.

“I said to the boys before the game ‘don’t disappoint them, they’ve come a long way to support you’.”

Pools did not disappoint the travelling army who appeared to make up half the crowd, though the official attendance was listed as 5,374.

The fans will be put to the test this Saturday when Portsmouth will pack out the Rink End with away fans.

Pools will head to the Lancashire coast again a week on Saturday when they visit Morecambe, where they won 5-2 a year ago.
