Ronnie Moore has moved swiftly to add signing number two to his Hartlepool United squad with former Barnsley striker Rhys Oates joining the squad.

The 20-year-old frontman follows Rakish Bingham through the entrance doors at Victoria Park, as Moore continues his summer re-building plans.

Moore hopes Oates will add much-needed competition to Bingham and last season’s top league scorer Scott Fenwick

Having released Marlon Harewood and with Jordan Hugill returning to parent club Preston North End, Moore had prioritised improving his attacking options ahead of the assault on League Two.

And he hopes Oates will add much-needed competition to Bingham and last season’s top league scorer Scott Fenwick.

Pontefract-born Oates was released from Oakwell at the end of the season having been on the books at the club since the age of six.

Moore moved swiftly to complete the deal yesterday with the 6ft 2” striker set to join up with his team-mates when they report for pre-season at the end of June.

Oates made his first team debut for The Tykes last August but has also gained senior experience with loan spells at Conference North side Gainsborough Trinity, where he scored twice in five games, and Stockport County in the 2013-14 season.

Oates had further loans spells at Grimsby Town and Chester last term, where he netted twice in seven matches but didn’t manage to register a goal for Barnsley in nine appearances.

The length of Oates’ contract has not been released by the club.
