HARTLEPOOL United legend Ritchie Humphreys admits he did not rest on his laurels when it came to his future at the club.
That is why the 34-year-old is today thrilled at having penned a new deal which will keep him at Victoria Park for a 12th season.
Humphreys’ contract was up for renewal last week and there had been a delay in announcing an extension to his stay.
But that news arrived yesterday afternoon, and the club captain told SportMail it had been a “nervous” wait.
“I’m absolutely delighted and I admit I’m a little relieved,” said the Pools legend.
“You do think the club might not need you any more and you do worry.
“So I was a little nervous and that’s why I’m thrilled to get it sorted.
“I have never wanted to play anywhere else and every time my contract has been up I’ve always wanted to sign another one.
“It was exactly the same this time and it’s nice now going into the summer knowing it’s sorted and that I’ll be coming back for pre-season at the club I love.”
