Hignett has already tied his two goalkeepers to new contracts, Trevor Carson and Adam Bartlett, while defender Josh Nearney and midfielders Nicky Featherstone and Lewis Hawkins have also put pen to paper.

The squad is very heavy in terms of numbers and the manager knows he must make some significant cuts in order to briong in new players.

Three players have already been told they are being released, teenage keeper Peter Denton, midfielder Ebby Nelson-Addy and winger Kudus Oyenuga.

And more players look set to learn today that they will be leavng.

“Everyone will know by today,” he said. “I will speak to everyone and they will be in no doubt where they lie.

“There are two [new contracts] I’d like to get done pretty quickly, then I can relax a little bit, then I can talk about the Adam Jacksons and things like that.”

Hignett is also preparing for the final match of the season at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

Pools will be without left-back Jake Carroll (calf) while Matthew Bates (ankle) is stuggling after coming off at half-time in the 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth last weekend.

“Jake Carroll is a no, Matty Bates is struggling,” said Hignett. “Apart from that, we are at full strength.”
