AT half-time, Mick Wadsworth was forced to remind the Hartlepool United players that at least four places were up for grabs in his squad for Saturday’s trip to Scunthorpe United.
With injuries and suspension having ripped through the senior side in the past seven days, Wadsworth is short of numbers going into the weekend.
He was here, at Billingham’s Bedford Terrace, to cast his eye over what lies beneath.
What he saw during the opening 45 minutes was enough to trigger a half-time intervention in the home-team dressing room.
Second-string coach Micky Barron explained: “This was a chance for them to impress because of the injuries we’ve got at the moment with Colin Nish, Colin Larkin and Sam Collins and we’re short of numbers.
“That’s what the manager said at half-time and he told them not many of them were doing it.
“I wasn’t very pleased at all with the first half either – I thought we were terrible.
“I made it quite clear at half-time that I wasn’t too happy but we got a response.
“Maybe that was the kick up the backside they needed for the second half.”
