Luke James wants to see the good side of Hartlepool United return after a Jekyll and Hyde week.

Pools went from one extreme to another inside four days, following up a good display against Northampton Town last Saturday by letting in four goals in a midweek flop at Bristol Rovers.

It has added pressure onto Craig Hignett’s side ahead of today’s visit to Barnet, one of the form sides in League Two.

“We need to improve from the Bristol Rovers game,” he told SportMail.

“It’s been two opposite ends of the scale really, we played really well against the team who had won 10 in a row.

“Against Northampton I thought we were the better team , even if we didn’t create any real clear-cut chances.

“Then Tuesday night was a shock to the system.

“Barnet is going to be another hard game but we have to put Tuesday night to bed.

“I don’t see why we can’t get something, I think we are capable of getting a result.

“We need to put Tuesday down as a blip because we were different class last Saturday.”

There were some bright spots against the Gas.

While Pools found the home net only once at the Memorial Stadium, they hit the post twice and Scott Fenwick could not convert what appeared to be something of a sitter.

The goal was a beauty as James, Carl Magnay and Brad Walker combined for Billy Paynter to beat Steve Mildenhall.

“It was a very good team goal, well finished by Billy,” said James.

“We need to try to build on that.”
