PETER Hartley believes his SportMail Player of the Year award is evidence of having achieved one of his pre-season goals.
The 24-year-old has won plaudits from management, team-mates and the press alike in recent months and his average rating of 6.47 has seen him top our Merit Marks column since the autumn.
“It’s nice to get the newspaper award because that shows the consistency I’ve achieved this season,” said Hartley after collecting his trophy at Victoria Park today.
“I did an interview with the Mail at the beginning of the season about consistency and that was the biggest thing I knew I had to get into my game.
“I’m not a young lad any more and when you get to 23, 24 then you’ve got to start cutting out those silly mistakes.
“So I’m delighted to get this award from the local paper.”
