COLIN Cooper hopes Hartlepool United’s players will now be free to finish their season in style.

Pools are safe from the threat of the drop after Easter Monday’s great comeback against Morecambe – their first win in seven matches.

Cooper now takes his side to an out-of-sorts Plymouth Argyle on Saturday looking to carry on where they left off against the Shrimps,

“The result hopefully gives people that might have been thinking negatively a chance to relax, be positive and express themselves in the last two games and see where we end up,” said the 47-year-old.

“As I have said before we can compete with any team in this league.

“But our confidence has been affected by the last six games.

“Hopefully Monday’s win and performance has lifted any tension which might have been affecting the players.

“I will be giving them the opportunity to be very expressive when we go to Plymouth and then play Exeter at home.”

But Cooper has stressed that any positive result can only be gained by solid foundations.

“To do that we still have to keep the back door closed,” said the manager, who was impressed by the never-say-die spirit his players produced in the aftermath of an abject defeat at Burton just two days earlier.

“I think the sort of talent we have in that dressing room those previous six

results should not have happened,” Cooper told SportMail.

“But they did, and going a goal behind and down to 10 men, they showed me something,

“After Saturday at Burton there were a lot stern words said between the group to galvanise us for Monday.

“And it [the spirit] was there and that gives me an awful lot of encouragement moving forward.”
