HARTLEPOOL United boss Colin Cooper is playing a waiting game over loan signings Jack Barmby and Luke Williams, writes ROY KELLY.

Both young prospects are due to return to parent clubs Manchester United and Middlesbrough after tomorrow’s trip to Northampton Town.

Williams has been a key component in the four-match unbeaten run which has lifted Pools to ninth in the Sky Bet League Two table – just six points off Southend United in seventh.

Barmby, largely due to the success of the starting XI, has had less of an impact, though the 19-year-old scored a stunner minutes into his debut as a sub against York City.

“I’ve spoken to Middlesbrough,” said Cooper.

“But we’re just waiting to see what they want to do with Luke.

“I know Aitor Karanka likes him as a player and sees his talent.

“All we’ve done here is to allow Luke to express his talent – he’s an exciting young player, who will have a very good career.

“If we can keep him for longer then that’s great,

“If Middlesbrough want him back there‘s nothing I can really do about it, that’s the nature of young players.

“I’ve had a conversation with Man United U21 coach Warren Joyce and I’m hopeful we can do something on that front.

“But it’s a case of wait and see.

“The clubs do know that we will help their development, they know their players are not coming into some crash, bang, wallop team.

“Jack is enjoying his time, which is nice to know, and he will get his opportunity on the pitch and then it’s down to the individual.

“He’s had a couple of good little cameos and done himself a lot of credit.

“I’m keen to extend his stay, but that’s Man United’s call.”
