NEALE Cooper believes that one of Hartlepool United’s best signings of the summer was in fact hometown boy Evan Horwood.
Given the number of high-profile players released at the end of the season, it slipped under the radar somewhat when the 26-year-old penned a new deal at Victoria Park last month
But not with Cooper.
The Scot has grown fond of Horwood since returning to the club in January and, when fit, the defender was always one of the first names on the teamsheet.
And that is why securing his future was just as important as bringing in fresh blood elsewhere in the squad.
“I was delighted when Evan signed,” said Cooper today.
“He’s a great boy, he’s one I love working with.
“He’s a Hartlepool boy, a Peter Hartley type, and that’s what it’s all about.
“I like him a lot, he’s a funny lad and he’s a pleasure to work with.
“He enjoys his work and that’s lovely to see.
“I get on well with him and you need that type of character around any squad.
“So to get him signed up at the end of the season was very important for me.”
