EXETER City’s St James’s Park harbours bittersweet memories for Andy Monkhouse.

It was at the Devon venue last season that he struck twice inside the opening half hour to ensure a 2-1 victory for Pools.

But then, with the goal gaping and a first-ever professional hat-trick seemingly inevitable, he managed to get in a tangle with strike partner Colin Larkin and his big chance to take home the matchball was gone.

“I can still remember that chance,” he laughs, “I’ll blame Larks though because he got in my way!

“I think he’ll say it was my fault but if he wasn’t there I would have scored.

“I’ve never scored a professional hat-trick so I look back on that game and think ‘yeah, I’m happy with the two goals but I’ve missed the easiest chance of them all for my third’.

“But two goals is better than none and I’d settle for that tomorrow for sure.”
