HARTLEPOOL United have not called off the search for new signings – but former loanee Charlie Wyke will not be rejoining the club.
There was some speculation this week that the Middlesbrough forward could be set for a return to Victoria Park once the loan window reopens next week.
Wyke spent the bulk of last season with Pools, scoring twice during 26 appearances.
But boss Colin Cooper, whose side take on Wycombe Wanderers today, has confirmed that the 20-year-old is not among his list of targets.
“I know Charlie was here last year and I know him really well,” he told SportMail.
“It’s no disrespect to Charlie but I think the lads we’ve got here fulfil what he could give us.”
Cooper, though, will continue to explore other avenues.
“I made another half a dozen phone calls on Sunday to put a few irons in a few fires but it never happened,” he went on.
“Just because we scored five goals (against Bradford on Tuesday) doesn’t mean I won’t look to improve the squad.
“We’re still trying to raise the bar.
“I want players who can make us better than what we are at the moment.
“If that puts pressure on the lads already here and increases competition then that’s what football is all about.”
