HARTLEPOOL United defender David Mirfin is set to miss tomorrow’s crunch match with Exeter City with a badly bruised toe injury, writes RICHARD MENNEAR.
But boss Ronnie Moore will give him until the last available minute to prove his fitness ahead of the match at Victoria Park (KO 3pm).
At this present time there is every chance he will be missingRonnie Moore
The on-loan Scunthorpe United centre back missed the 3-0 defeat at Luton Town, although scans have revealed he has not broken the toe or suffered ligament damage.
Moore was hoping a week’s rest would see Mirfin fit to play but he remains a major doubt, with Scott Harrison and Dan Jones set to continue in a flat back four.
Mirfin, who turned 30 last Saturday, is currently back at parent club Scunthorpe.
Moore said: “We have missed Mirf and we’ve worked on the back four the majority of this week in case he’s not fit.
“There’s no fracture, no ligament tear, it’s just very sore and we wait and see.
“At this present time, I think there’s every chance he will be missing.”
Moore did concede Mirfin will be given every chance to play though.
“I will wait until the last minute because his experience has been invaluable,” Moore told SportMail.
“The two younger ones definitely missed him against Luton, I think they thought he was going to be behind them mopping up.
“I had to tell them at half-time he is at Scunny, not here!
“Be aware that you two are the last line of defence for us.”
Moore almost has a fully-fit squad to choose from, with Michael Woods (ankle) and Mirfin (toe) the only major injury concerns.
Matthew Bates is back fully training, while Brad Walker has overcome a slight knock.
l A young Hartlepool United reserve side will travel to Mansfield Town today (KO 2pm) for the final Final Third Development League match of the season.
