Hartlepool United have the talent and the team to cause Luton Town problems in Saturday’s vital League Two match.

That is the view of Nathan Thomas as Pools go to Kenilworth Road just three points above the relegation zone.

We can go and cause them problems, we just have to be solid as a tream defensively

But buoyed by his man-of-the-match display and a spirited Pools comeback attempt against Notts County on Tuesday night, Thomas is confident Craig Hignett’s side can get a result against the Hattters.

Pools have scored four times under their new manager, a back-to-fitness Billy Paynter getting two of them and Thomas two assists, including for Jake Gray’s Victoria park wondergoal.

Luton’s record on home soil is not clever - only Morecambe, Dagenham & Redbridge and, inevitably, Pools have lost more on their own patch.

“Luton are a really good team,” Thomas told SportMail. “They a very solid League Two team.

“They normally sell the place out and it’s always a great atmosphere at Kenilworth Road.

“But we have the individual players and the team that can cause them problems.

“Billy has obviously found a bit of form with three goals in his last three game - he is one of the best centre-forwards in the division on this form.

“With Luke [James], Jake and myself they are not going to like the pace we’ve got going forward.

“We can go and cause them problems, we just have to be solid as a tream defensively.”

Thomas hailed Gray’s goal of the season contender against the Magpies, his fellow 21-year-old firing a stunning volley beyond Northern Ireland keeper Roy Carroll.

“Jake has that bit of quality you don’t often see in League Two,” said the former Mansfield Town winger.

“When he moves with the ball he does it so effortlessly.

“It’s like watching Giggsy.

“Jake just seems to float across the turf.

“He’s a fantastic player, you can see the football education he’s had, coming from Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

“Just look at that goal - he didn’t snach at it, he composed himself and hit it so sweetly, it was a great finish.”
