SCOTT Fenwick played 90 minutes for Hartlepool United’s reserves in their 2-1 cup defeat at Middlesbrough.

The former Dunston UTS striker, Paul Murray’s third signing since taking over as manager, got a further run-out for the reserves to build his fitness.

Goals in either half from Emmanuel Ledesma and ex-Pools loanee Ryan Brobbel gave Boro a 2-0 lead before substitute Tom Mithchinson pulled one back late on for the visitors.

Boro’s second string dominated the match at their training base at Rockliffe, and should have won the game by a bigger margin.

But credit to Sam Collins’ team, they kept going and enjoyed a much strong final 30 minutes culminating in Mitchinson’s well-hit strike in the 80th minute.

Pools named two trialists in the squad, both goalkeepers, for the Final Third Development league cup match – watched by a host of first team Boro players.

Ex-Peterbough United keeper Aidan Grant, 19, from South Shields, played the first 45 minutes before former Doncaster Rovers keeper Jonathan Maxted came on at the break.

Neither could do much about the goals, with Ledesma scoring on the stroke of half-time with a clinical finish.

Brobbel doubled their lead in the 51st minute, another low strike taken well by the Hartlepool-born winger.

It was Hartlepool’s second league cup match of the group stage and it followed the 2-1 win over Gateshead last Wednesday.

Michael Woods went off for Pools in the second half with a thigh problem, but Fenwick played the full 90 minutes as he continues to build his fitness.

Hartlepool-born Harry Chapman came on as a sub for Boro, the highly-rated youngster coming on just before half-time.
