HARTLEPOOL United could be set for a double celebration ahead of the weekend trip to Notts County, writes CRAIG HOPE.
Mick Wadsworth and Scott Flinders have been nominated for the monthly npower League One manager and player prizes respectively.
And it’s easy to see why.
Pools took 12 points from 12 during a four-game September programme, climbing as high as third in the table.
They kicked off the month with a 2-0 home victory over Exeter City with Gary Liddle and Nathan Luscombe, with his maiden professional goal, on target.
Seven days later they travelled to northern rivals Carlisle United and were two goals to the good by half-time, Liddle and Adam Boyd among the goals.
But Flinders and his rearguard had to withstand heavy pressure late on after the Cumbrians pulled one back from the penalty spot.
It was back to Victoria Park the following weekend for the visit of Bury and again they cruised to victory, Nobby Solano netting his first for the club before Colin Nish bagged a second-half double.
And they signed off for the month with a gritty 2-1 triumph at last season’s play-off semi-finalists Bournemouth.
Flinders was again outstanding as Pools came from behind to make it five wins on the spin in total, Solano curling home a 25-yard free-kick before Evan Horwood smashed a late second.
Wadsworth’s rivals for the award are Phil Brown, of Preston North End, Charlton Athletic chief Chris Powell, whose side are currently leading the way in the table, and Martin Allen, the man in charge of Sunday’s opponents Notts County.
Flinders, meanwhile, is up against three strikers.
Gary Madine, of Sheffield Wednesday, Preston hitman Neil Mellor and Chesterfield’s Leon Clarke are the trio vying with the Pools gloveman for the prize.
The winners will be announced this Friday.
