Craig Hignett rang the changes tonight for Hartlepool United in the EFL Cup trip to Preston North End.

Keeper Trevor Carson, defender Rob Jones and midfielders Nicky Featherstone and Lewis Hawkins were both rested with skipper Billy Paynter missing through illness.

Adam Bartlett, the hero of last year's Capital One Cup upset at Fleetwood, came in between the sticks, with Matthew Bates replacing Jones at the back. the defender also taking the skipper's armband.

It was all change in midfield with Hignett opting for a return to a three, with Josh Laurent, Nicky Deverdics and Michael Woods coming into the side.

That meant a three-pronged attack of Amond through the middle with Nathan Thomas to his left and Lewis Alesssandra on the right.

Preston boss Simon Grayson made two changes to his side following the 1-0 Championshiup defeat at Reading on Saturday, bringing in Alan Browne and Eoin Doyle for Jernaine Beckford and Tom Clarke, who missed out with a hamstring problem.
