JOHN Hughes believes that Sam Collins has been his best player in recent weeks.

Despite his side’s loss of form – they were without a win and a goal in five matches going into today’s visit of Walsall – Hughes says his centre-back has maintained an impressive level of performance.

The 35-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is one of those who the Pools boss must decide whether or not to keep at Victoria Park.

Collins could have the option of a coaching role with Hull City’s academy should he be released from Clarence Road.

But, in the short-term at least, his manager is delighted with his form.

“Sam has been my best player these past few weeks and even beyond that,” Hughes told SportMail.

“He’s found a level of form and has maintained it.

“He’s not one who shouts about things, he goes about his business and leads by example.

“He’s never put a foot wrong, he’s heading it, winning his tackles and keeping it simple.”
