Hartlepool United’s second string kicked off their season with a 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United’s reserves.

Connor Smith and 22-year-old triallist Kingsley Williams - who scored from 20-yards - grabbed the goals in the Final Third Development League victory.

Williams, a midfielder, started out his football career playing in Sheffield United’s youth set up before spending two years with in Australia with Sydney Olympic.

Williams then moved to Spain, playing for Cultural Deportiva Leonesa in the Segunda División.

In January this year, a move to AC Monza fell through and he made his way back to England, signing for Ilkeston FC.

John Hewitson and Ian McGuckin are overseeing the reserves this season and they named a strong side, with Brad Walker, Matty Bates and Stuart Parnaby all given a run out.

Parnaby - who has been training with Pools all summer despite being released at the end of last season - lasted just 14 minutes though before being subbed.

Pools: Denton, Parnaby (Wood 14), Howes, Green, Turnbull, Bates (Travers 61), Nelson-Addy, Walker, Smith, Williams (Elliott 88), Oyenuga.

Subs not used: Dawson, Jewson.
