HARTLEPOOL United fans have voted James Poole as the winner of the Michael Maidens’ Goal of the Season award.
Poole’s effort in the 2-1 win over Notts County - a stunning volley having first cushioned a Jon Franks’ cross and lobbed the ball over his marker - attracted the most votes from a shortlist of nine compiled by Hartlepool United.
And Poole told the club’s official website: “I think I would have to say it’s probably the best goal I’ve ever scored.
“It might not look the best because it doesn’t fly in to the top corner from thirty-five yards or anything, but technically I was really pleased with the goal.
“I like to try things like that - it’s something that’s always been in my game so to be able to lift it over the defender’s head and then hit it without it bouncing was very satisfying.
“I read a report afterwards saying that I could have just hit it first time but that option didn’t even enter my head - watching it back I suppose I could have really but it wouldn’t have been as good!”
