Hartlepool United saviour Ronnie Moore linked with Pools job

Ronnie Moore has emerged as a shock candidate for the vacant chief executive role at Hartlepool United.

Moore was sacked by Pools in February – just 10 months after pulling off the Great Escape when the club seemed destined to fall out of the Football League.

But SportMail understands the 63-year-old is interested in succeeding Russ Green, who has left his position as chief executive.

The veteran boss lost his job with Pools close to the League Two relegation zone, owners JPNG bringing in Craig Hignett to good effect.

But Moore, for all the disappointment at losing one of his favourite jobs, has retained close ties with the club and was back at the Vic in April for the final home match of the season.

While viewed very much as ‘old school’, Moore is fiercely passionate about Pools and has a wealth of experience – he is now into his sixth decade in the game.

Former Pools boss, Chris Turner, has proven a success in his transformation from manager to chief executive, having taken charge of that role at League One Chesterfield.

Turner was even linked with the Sunderland CEO post after Margaret Byrne’s departure at the end of last season.

Whether Moore would fit JPNG’s vision of the post remains to be seen but, clearly, he is a man very serious about Pools.

He has been out of work since leaving Pools, though he was linked heavily with Chester in April.

Green has left after 14 years at the Vic.

After starting as commercial manager in 2002, he was appointed chief executive by then chairman Ken Hodcroft in 2007.

He was named as League Two chief executive of the year in both 2014 and 2015.

“After 14 years of service Russ has earned the right to put himself first,” chairman Gary Coxall told the club website.

“He will always be welcome at the Vic and I’m sure we’ll see him at many games because he has an enormous passion for this club.

“I would like to thank Russ for all his effort and commitment over the years, in particular over the last 12 months during which he has helped JPNG settle in as owners.

“I want to re-assure all supporters that this development won’t affect our plans to drive the club forward and everyone behind the scenes is working hard to make sure 2016/17 is an exciting season.”
