HARTLEPOOL United have extended the loan stay of Charlie Wyke ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Shrewsbury Town (kick off 3pm).
The 20-year-old’s latest one-month deal expired this week but Pools have now sealed an extension with parent club Middlesbrough which will keep the forward at Victoria Park until the end of the season.
Wyke is now likely to line up alongside Steve Howard in attack at New Meadow.
And Pools boss John Hughes explained: “We were very keen to keep Charlie at the club and we’re glad we got it sorted with Middlesbrough.
“It means he’s now available this weekend which is great news.”
Wyke, however, is yet to open his scoring account for his loan club from his nine appearances.
But in that time he has impressed both staff and supporters alike, and Hughes went on: “He’s done very well.
“The next stage for him is to score a few goals.
“But the reason I like him is because he trains well.
“He always gets a sweat on and puts a lot into it.
“He’s an honest lad and I like that, you know what you’re getting.”
Wyke will be vying with James Poole for a starting berth against the Shropshire outfit.
Elsewhere, Hughes has a fully-fit squad from which to choose, Simon Walton having recovered from the hamstring strain which forced him off during the 1-0 defeat to Preston North End on New Year’s Day.
Neil Austin, however, is expected to start in midfield with Jordan Richards having done enough in recent weeks to keep his place at right-back.
And Hughes added: “For the first time for a while I have everyone fit.
“We’ve been putting Aussie on in a midfield role and we’ll be looking at that.
“He can do well in there and is another option.
“Jordan has done ever so well at right-back you have to say.”
POOLS (probable): Flinders; Richards, Hartley, Collins, Horwood; Austin; Franks, Sweeney, Humphreys; Wyke; Howard. Subs: McHugh; Baldwin, Walton, Poole, Holden, Monkhouse, James.
