CHARLIE Wyke admits the perfect remedy to his weekend illness was a goal and three points against Crewe Alexandra.
The Middlesbrough loanee had been forced off after an hour during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Scunthorpe United.
But Wyke beat his bug to start against the Railwaymen and netted Pools’ opener on 27 minutes before completing the match.
“It was disappointing to come off after an hour at the weekend – I didn’t know what was wrong with me, I just felt lethargic and dizzy,” the 20-year-old striker explained to SportMail.
“So to bounce back like that is perfect – a win and I scored a goal, there’s nothing better.”
The goal was Wyke’s second in Pools colours, his maiden strike having come via a deflection in the 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury Town in January.
There was no doubt about last night’s effort, however, the frontman stooping to head home from close range after out-muscling his marker to get on the end of Jack Baldwin’s knock-down.
“I saw Jack pulling on the shoulder of the defender and gambled on it,” he looked back. I had to be brave to get in front of the defender.
“He kicked me in the head but it was worth it for the goal.
“It was a better feeling than my first goal because that one took a bit of a deflection and all of the lads were trying to take it off me.
“This one is definitely mine.”
Wyke admits that Pools had been slowly out of the blocks before his opener.
Jonathan Franks added a second before the break and Andy Monkhouse wrapped it up in injury-time.
And Wyke believes it was as impressive a display as Pools have served up during his time at the club.
“I thought we played really well, probably the best since I’ve been here in terms of discipline and work-rate,” he said.
“We kept our shape and they just couldn’t penetrate us.
“The first five or 10 minutes they passed it about and we didn’t start well.
“But once we’re in front we have to confidence to stay in front.
“Jon got a great second and the third was another good goal, so we’re all delighted.”
