Almere City 1 Hartlepool United 0

HARTLEPOOL United suffered defeat in the opening game of their pre-season campaign.

Karim Fachtali spectacular first half strike handed Almere City the victory in a mundane pre-season friendly in Holland where Pools struggled to create any clearcut chances.

Trialists Evan Horwood, Paul Murray and Fabian Yantorno all featured for Pools with Chris Turner making 10 changes for the second half as he tinkered with two different formations.

Fachtali's strike from the edge of the area was the only opportunity of note in the opening 45 minutes and the action was little better after the break.

Almere had the best of the second half chances but couldn't find a way past Pools keeper Scott Flinders.

Pools (first half, 4-2-4): Rafferty; Haslam, Liddle, Johnson, Horwood; McSweeney, Murray; Mackay, Greulich, Behan, Bjornsson.

(Second half 4-4-2): Flinders; Austin, Collins, Hartley, Horwood; Larkin (Murray 83), Gamble, Yantorno, Sweeney; Boyd, Monkhouse.
