“OH my God – this ball is coming towards me”.
Not a phrase Pools goalkeeper Scott Flinders hopes he is uttering in trepidation tomorrow afternoon.
But the last time Bournemouth were in town that was the moment when Flinders was presented with his chance for redemption.
Having conceded the softest of first-half goals, Flinders had pleaded with then manager Mick Wadsworth to allow him to charge upfield for a last-minute corner.
With the score at 2-1 to Cherries it was last-chance saloon for the hosts.
Flinders takes up the story: “I just remember looking across to Mick to see if I could go up.
“I thought ‘I can’t do any worse than I have already’ – I’d had an awful game.
“I sprinted into the box and the corner was taken.
“The next thing I thought ‘oh my God, this ball is coming towards me – I’ve got to get my head on it’.
“I just closed my eyes and hoped for the best.”
The result was a bullet header which nestled into the back of the Town End goal – cue wild celebrations.
