Horwood on Pools trip despite Aberdeen talks
TRIALIST Evan Horwood flew to Holland with the rest of the Hartlepool United squad last night despite holding talks with Aberdeen.
The Hartlepool-born left-back trained with the Scottish Premier League side on Friday before entering discussions with Dons boss Mark McGhee over a potential move to Pittodrie on Saturday.
But SportMail understands there was never any question that Horwood would not join Pools on their annual tour to the Netherlands after spending the first week of pre-season training with Chris Turner's men.
Free agent Horwood has impressed at Pools' Maiden Castle training base and was invited on the trip to Holland, where he is expected to feature in the opening pre-season friendly against Almere City tomorrow night.
The 24-year-old is desperate to sign for his hometown club and it is understood that Pools remain his favoured destination for a move.
But the ex-Carlisle and Sheffield United defender is keeping his options open and was given Turner's blessing to train and hold talks with the Dons.
Horwood was impressed with the facilities on offer at Pittodrie and knows the SPL well from his days with Gretna.
The Dons don't begin their pre-season schedule until Saturday and Horwood agreed with McGhee that he would play in a friendly if he is not offered a deal by Pools.
Horwood has still not held any contract talks with Turner, who wants to see the defender in a game-situation.
But Horwood's chances of being offered terms will significantly improve if he impresses both in tomorrow's game and Thursday's clash with FC Den Bosch, particularly after Pools missed out on the signature of first-choice left-back target Michael Rose.
There is interest in Horwood from several League Two outfits but the Seaton Carew-based defender does not want to drop down to the bottom tier.
