Pools boss issues relegation warning
OUTSPOKEN Chris Turner today issued a stark warning about the need for new players after Hartlepool United's pre-season campaign slumped to a new low.
A Pools side containing several players earmarked to provide back-up to the first team were humiliated at Northern Counties League outfit Garforth Town last night who ran out comfortable 2-1 winners.
The defeat, coming just three days after a 5-0 thrashing by Leeds United, led Turner to publicly concede that Pools will be in another relegation scrap if they don't bring in new players before the League One opener in 10 days time.
Turner has identified several targets who he believes would strengthen the squad, including trialist trio Evan Horwood, Fabian Yantorno and Paul Murray.
But the director of sport has not been given the resources to bring in a single outfield player this summer despite Pools finishing in League One's bottom six for the last two seasons.
Turner, who will oversee a stronger side at Whitley Bay tonight (kick-off 7.30pm), told SportMail: "We need some players at this football club.
"We just managed to stay in League One last season with this squad of
players minus seven players.
"That tells its own story.
"In my opinion, we need to bring in four players who are good quality
players.
"We're in League One, we want to stay there and we want to move up.
"But the players who played last night, on that performance aren't good enough to sustain Hartlepool United in League One."
