Pools boss wants more competition
CHRIS Turner today reiterated the need for increased competition in Hartlepool United's squad despite his fringe players earning the club's first pre-season victory.
A brace from trialist Tom Roberts and a header from half-time substitute Billy Greulich secured a 3-0 win in torrential rain at non-league South Shields last night.
First-team contenders Denis Behan, Colin Larkin, Jon-Andre Fredriksen and Michael Mackay all featured in an experimental Pools line-up and largely failed to catch the eye of the watching Turner and first-team coach Mick Wadsworth.
Turner is still hoping to push through deals for on-trial trio Evan Horwood, Paul Murray and Fabian Yantorno and would like to make further reinforcements to make the competition for first-team places as stiff as possible.
The director of sport said: "I think we need to add two or three players to the squad to make us a bit more competitive.
"We're in a difficult division and we've got to be looking to be as strong as possible in this league.
"You'd like to think those who were involved last night could have shined a bit better than they did.
"Every game you go out and play is an opportunity to show people what you can do.
"Some players do, some don't.
"But it's a performance for me and Mick to have a look at."
