Steady Steve won’t bang on Hartlepool Utd boss’s door

AT 32 years old, Steve Haslam isn’t about to start twisting his face when he’s left out of the first-team.

Rather, the mild-mannered Yorkshireman is your archetypal consummate pro.

He found himself out in the cold under former boss Mick Wadsworth, instead captaining Micky Barron’s reserve-team with minimum protest.

But now, with Neale Cooper having been impressed by Haslam’s attitude and performance on the training pitches at Maiden Castle, he finds himself back involved with the senior set-up.

He played the full 90 minutes during the 2-2 draw with former club Sheffield Wednesday last month and was a first-half replacement for the injured Evan Horwood during last Saturday’s 4-0 demolition of Carlisle United.

He’s enjoyed that taste of first-team football and is determined to stay in the manager’s plans - but he won’t be banging on Cooper’s door should he be named on the bench at home to Bournemouth tomorrow.

“Sometimes I probably think I should kick up more of a fuss, but you can’t change what you are I suppose,” he told SportMail today.

“You could see that as a negative thing, but it’s also a massive positive.

“I’m in my 30s and I’m still playing at a good level and I’m still fit.

“I wouldn’t change that at all.

“Sometimes my versatility has gone against me in the past, but again that can be another positive because you can come in in a number of positions.

“But there’s no reason why I can’t stay in and around the team, I’ve just got to keep on impressing the manager on a daily basis.”

Steady and reliable, never lets the side down, just unfortunate that he cant get a regular berth in the team. Every club needs players like Steve
