Trial stars pass test for Pools star

TONY Sweeney today claimed Hartlepool United's trialist trio have eased concerns over a lack of summer signings.

Director of sport Chris Turner will hold talks with free agents Evan Horwood, Paul Murray and Fabian Yantorno this week after Pools returned from their annual pre-season tour of Holland on Saturday.

All three trialists featured in both games in the Netherlands and are likely to be offered permanent terms at Victoria Park to provide a cost-effective injection of fresh blood into the Pools squad.

Hartlepool-born Horwood is almost certain to be offered a deal, particularly with SPL outfit Aberdeen still interested, while Yantorno and Murray impressed Turner during the second game in Holland against FC Den Bosch.

Pools fans have become concerned at the lack of transfer activity at the Vic during the summer with back-up keeper Andy Rafferty the only new acquisition since the end of last season.

But Sweeney believes the three trialists, who have all previously worked under Pools first-team coach Mick Wadsworth, have provided the necessary boost in the dressing room.

Sweeney said: "It's been a bit strange but we've had a few trialists in who act as new signings.

"All three have worked with Mick before so he knows what they can bring.

"They've been bedding in just as much as everyone else.

"I haven't been on trial. But I imagine it's the same as going to any new club with new lads to get to know.

"The three lads who've come in have been excellent."
