NEWCASTLE United got their first win under John Carver at the KC Stadium this afternoon.

Goals from Remy Cabella, Sammy Ameobi and Yoan Gouffran gave Carver’s side a 3-0 Premier League victory over relegation-threatened Hull City.

It was Carver’s first game since being appointed as head coach until the end of the campaign.

And the result stretched the gap between Newcastle, backed by 2,500 fans, including injured defender Paul Dummett, at a wintry KC Stadium, and third-from-bottom Hull to 11 points.

The home side made the better start – Tim Krul gathered an early shot from Andy Robertson – and United’s goalkeeper and Fabricio Coloccini combined to deny Steve Bruce’s side in the 18th minute.

Curtis Davies met a ball from Ahmed Elmohamady with his head, and Krul saved. Coloccini eventually scrambled the ball clear.

Newcastle just couldn’t keep hold of the ball, and time and again they lost possession.

But it was a careless pass from a Hull player which turned the game. Robertson inadvertantly played in Cabella just outside the box, and the midfielder created himself space before shooting past McGregor.

Elmohamady had a goal ruled out seconds before the break for handball, the former Sunderland defender having punched the ball into the net.

It got better for United after the interval, again thanks to a loose pass from a Hull player.

Ameobi took the ball 40 yards from goal and took a couple of strides forward before unleashing a fierce left-footed shot, which swerved away from McGregor.

Nikica Jelavic missed an open goal from a yard out after Krul diverted a cross from Gaston Ramirez to him.

Newcastle now had control of the game, and substitute Yoan Gouffran added a third with a deflected shot in the 78th minute.

The result moved the club up to 10th in the table ahead of the rest of this afternoon’s games.
