HARTLEPOOL United slumped to a thumping defeat on a miserable night at Boundary Park.

Mick Wadsworth’s men were on the back foot from the off and fell behind in the seventh minute when Aidy White smashed home the loose ball after Scott Flinders had saved from Sunderland loanee Oumare Tounkara.

Leeds United teenager White then cracked the woodwork before Sam Collins spurned a glorious opportunity to level matters when heading wide from Evan Horwood’s corner just before the break.

Skipper Collins went close with another header after the restart but The Latics doubled their advantage on 50

minutes when Chris Taylor fired through bodies from close range, Neil Austin having blocked Filipe Morais’ shot on the line after an individual error by Peter Hartley.

And the game was put out of sight by the hosts 20 minutes from time, Cedric Evina, the marauding full-back, arrowing an unstoppable drive into the top corner from just inside the area.

There was still time for new signing Reuben Reid to add a bit of gloss to the scoreline with a header from six yards in stoppage time after Evina had delivered an inch-perfect centre.
