FORMER Middlesbrough midfielder Gary Gill is swapping the commentary box for the directors box.

Boro have appointed the popular 46-year-old as the club’s new European scout.

Gill has spent the last four years as the summariser for Boro on the match commentaries broadcast by BBC Tees, working alongside Ally Brownlee.

Boro boss and former Ayresome Park team-mate Tony Mowbray will be looking to Gill to identify talent on the continent where players are often noted for being good value for money.

Gill’s position in the comm-box with go to another former Boro midfielder, Craig Hignett.

Higgy spent six years at Boro (winning two promotions) and went down in history as the first player to score at the Riverside.

The Scouser, now living in Wynyard, played for Aberdeen, Barnsley, Pools and Darlington after leaving the Riverside.
