Aitor Karanka says he’s ‘close’ to signing the right striker – but admits he’s getting tired of talking about it.

The Championship side are keen to bolster their ranks as they look to secure promotion to the Premier League this season.

We have to keep calm and we have to try to bring the right one in. We’re close to that one, and we have three more weeks to bring the right one in.

Jordan Rhodes has been rumoured to be arriving on Teesside for weeks but more recently so has been Leicester striker David Nugent.

However, Karanka – whose team travel to Oldham Athletic for a Capital One Cup clash – refused to give out any more information on who the club is working towards and is remaining patient in his hunt for a goalscorer.

“I’m tried about speaking about strikers because always there are different names,” he said.

“I heard we’d offered £14m for Jordan Rhodes and that wasn’t true, so for this reason I want to stop speaking about strikers because we’re working – we need to work inside and try to bring the right one.

“I think we’re close to bringing the right one, but I can’t speak every day about strikers because I’m hearing every day other managers and people saying we’re spending a lot of money, but we didn’t spend any on a striker.

“We have to keep calm and we have to try to bring the right one in. We’re close to that one, and we have three more weeks to bring the right one in.

“We have a list (of targets) but at this moment we’re trying to bring one in, because we have three weeks but we can’t be wasting time on two or three or four options. We’re closing in on this option and working on one.”

Boro have already signed Stewart Downing for £5.5m from West Ham.
