kevin Thompson took another step toward a first team return with a 70 minute run out for Middlesbrough reserves in a 3-1 win at Blackpool.

The 26-year-old Scot had previously played 45 minutes of last week’s 6-3 win over Scunthorpe reserves and was back in action yesterday in the friendly at Bloomfield Road.

He has been out of action since summer surgery to repair ankle and leg injuries.

Striker Luke Williams scored twice in the game while Bruno Pilatos was also on target.

Andy Halliday, who scored a hat-trick in the Central League last week, was included in the squad.

The Blackpool friendly was organised by Boro coach and former Pools assistant boss Steve Agnew.

Boro reserves return to League action in the first week of October with a game against Gateshead.
