Middlesbrough’s dramatic pursuit of £1million rated Uruguayan winger Carlos de Pena looks like going down to the wire.

De Pena is currently on a flight heading for Heathrow, due to arrive at 3.30pm, where he is expected to meet with a delegation from the Championship outfit.

Boro are racing against the clock though to tie up a deal before the 6pm deadline, with the details still to be finalised.

His club Nacional made a number of attempts to hold on to de Pena including denying him permission to fly and rejecting several offers.

Reports say 23-year-old De Pena has had at least part of a medical while he changed flights in Sao Paolo.

But the deal needs finalising when he lands in the capital.

Nacional president Eduardo Ache, said: “I spoke to De Pena [yesterday] afternoon and he said he was leaving because it was a life opportunity, that we should let him go.

“I told him that in this situation he can’t go, it was not about the money.

“The damage has already been done. It would be difficult to get the player back.”

He can play on either flank and has scored 10 goals in 53 games for the club.
