MIDDLESBROUGH boss Aitor Karanka has made his first signing of the summer by snapping up Real Madrid goalkeeper Tomas Mejias.
The 25-year-old stopper was on loan at Boro from the Spanish giants last season but only made one appearance for the club after suffering a hand injury in his debut at Sheffield Wednesday.
Despite that, Karanka has moved quickly to tie Mejias down on a permanent basis with the Spaniard signing a two-year deal at the Riverside.
The signing again raises questions about the future of Jason Steele.
The England under-21 international was Boro’s regular between the sticks while Tony Mowbray was in charge but was never able to nail down a spot in Karanka’s side after seeing red in the Spaniard’s first game in charge at Leeds United.
Former Hartlepool United keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos made the number one jersey his own after Christmas and his fine form earned him a one-year contract extension.
Mejias made one appearance for the Real Madrid first team during his time in the Spanish capital.
He also has six caps for Spain’s under 20 team and two international appearances at under 19 level to his name.
