The 28-year-old Muslim has not been involved in the club's pre-season fixtures to date as a result of his refusal to wear the club's new Wonga-sponsored shirt because of his religious beliefs. However, the two parties managed to find a solution, with the help of the Professional Footballers' Association, last week, and the striker is now back in the Magpies fold. The 21-year-old, signed from Tenerife in the summer, has previously made nine substitute appearances for Newcastle.

Cisse was troubled by a knee problem in the build-up to the game.

United manager Alan Pardew is still without midfielder Cheik Tiote, and Vurnon Anita starts in his place.

Meanwhile, utility player Ryan Taylor is on the bench after recovering from the twice-ruptured cruciate ligament which has kept him out for two years.

Defender Mike Williamson and striker Emmanuel Riviere remain sidelined.
